Outwoods and Winter: A Perfect Match

By Bob Meyers

For outdoor winter events, no organization within the GLBT community does a better job of heating things up in the frozen tundra known as Minnesota than Outwoods. Although we have had a rather mild winter thus far (tell me, who isn't just a little thankful for this touch of El Nino--or is it global warming?), there are still plenty of activities planned by this loose knit group of outdoor activists.

Outwoods, for those who are not familiar with the name, is an organization which relies on a newsletter transmitted to its members to broadcast its events. Anyone can suggest an activity and it is up to members to initiate and follow through on events. It has worked marvelously thus far, and they have many activities planned for this winter. Among the many offerings are cross country ski trips, downhill ski trips, snow shoeing and even skating events.

For example, on Jan. 10 (a Saturday), there will be a candlelight ski trip at Afton State Park. In a spectacular setting, with a full moon overhead and 2.5 miles of candlelit trails, participants will meet at the Visitor Center at 6:30 p.m. to experience a peaceful commune with winter's wonders, and perhaps an aerobic workout as well. A state park permit and a DNR cross-country ski pass is required for this outing. For more information, call Paul at (612) 487-1671.

Also occurring the same day is a snowshoe event at Fort Snelling State Park. A fun alternative to other winter sports, snow shoeing is a great way to romp through the snow and work the legs, as well as get an aerobic workout. The park is offering free use of its snowshoes, however space is limited, so pre-registration is required. Call the park at (612) 726-9247 to reserve a spot. Participants will meet at Fort Snelling State Park's Visitor Center at 1 p.m. A state park vehicle permit is required. Any questions for this event should be directed to Paul at the same number listed above.

In the grand tradition of Outwoods, there is even someone available for spontaneous ski events; downhill or cross-country. Call Jackie at (612) 915-9410 if you want to take advantage of some fresh snow (okay--any snow), and you want some companions to join you.

Due to the serious lack of snow across the state, the participation in many of these typical winter events has been virtually nonexistent, according to Roy Hallanger, the main point of contact for persons wishing to list/organize an event during the following month. To contact him, call (612) 822-5935. Hopefully, a fresh coating--any coating--of snow will boost participation dramatically.
